Nocturne Cosplay at Anime North

7 Jun

Hello GGG followers and guests!

As some of you know I was assisting with a Nocturne Cosplay (Click here to see how we made the arm pieces) for Anime north. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to help finish it completely so we just worked with what we had!

I rushed the mask and cloak with the shoulder pieces, and left him to spray paint it XD. I think it turned out pretty well considering we spent minimal time on it and rushed it the last second! If I had more time the quality would definitely be better, and the body would have some armor pieces like the in-game Nocturne model.

Here are the spikes, hardening to be glued on the shoulders:

The head piece is made the same way I did the Shyvana helmet:

Here are the final accessories. The mask has a very thin layer of fabric over, so he could see a bit:

We used white out for the mask since it was last minute and stores were closed XD.  Overall I know this isn’t the best cosplay, but I think it pulled off Nocturne pretty well for it being rushed and unfinished!

I made a cross bred champion!!!! Oh no! Shyturne is very OP!

That’s a wrap for Nocturne Cosplay! If we go to another convention, that Nocturne Cosplay will definitely be updated and perfected! Anyone can comment below on our cosplays!

BTW check this new animation movie “Wreck-it-Ralph” about arcade games! Looks pretty good!

Shyvana Cosplay Cost/Review

3 Jun

Hello Everyone!

This will hopefully be my last post about Shyvana Cosplay! You guys must be sick of it! I thought it might be interesting to break down the cost of my cosplay and review a few things I should have done differently. First I’ll do a cost break down:

Shyvana Cosplay Cost Breakdown:

  • Foam board  ($1.25 x 13) = $18.36
  • Spray foam ($8.99 x 2.5 cans) = $25.40
  • Body paint = $63.61
  • Fabric + bra cups = $32 (ish)
  • Boots = $14.68
  • Gloves= $4.51
  • Paints/spray paints = $90 (ish)
  • Fast Mache ($13.99 x3) = $47.43
  • Sand paper = (5.99 x 3) = $20.31
  • Polyfilla Plaster = (3.99 x 2) = $9.02
  • Plaster tool = $1.13
  • Masking Tape = $2.49
  • Head strap (Given) = $0
  • Velcro = $1.13

Total of Shyvana Cosplay = Priceless $330.07

Thing I would have done differently for the Shyvana Cosplay:

  1. Check for coupons at the Micheals’ art’s and craft store. The day I bought Paints it came out to $90, which I was shocked. I realized that they often have coupons online for 40% off different items and sometimes off a whole purchse. I really could have saved a lot of money if I checked deals instead of accepting the bill.
  2. Peel all the paper off the foam boards before starting a prop. As I painted and even during the convention I noticed that the paper off the foam board started peeling off since it wasn’t strongly attached to the board. All I had to do was super glue it back to the foam board, but If I had peeled it off in the first place I wouldn’t have any problems with it
  3. Use cardboard instead of foam board. I’m not sure if it would be better to use, but it definitely would have been cheaper. I’ll have to try it out another time. I had some lying around but since I’m obsessed with keeping things white, I had to pay for it -_-.
  4. Spray paint all the props. I am still debating what would have been better. I wanted to show detail and depth in my props, but i would have saved time and maybe money if i just spray painted all the red on and then applied the gold.
  5. More time!  I think most people have this problem. You can never have enough time!

In the end I was very pleased with my Shyvana Cosplay and I enjoyed the positive comments. In the end if I knew the price of the project and the hassle of the make up I might have no done this cosplay. It makes me sad to say this but it is true! Its a lot of money and time invested which I should have calculated in the beginning.  I hope that people enjoyed this cosplay otherwise! I might wear it again for other conventions, we’ll see!

Shyvana and League at Anime North

28 May

Hello Everyone!

As you probably are aware, we have been pretty busy with Anime North and seeing some awesome cosplays! I will be honest that this is very awkward, and I feel so nerdy, but here is a video of me trying to reinact Shyvana in emotes:

In other news, we had a fun night on Saturday, here’s a photo showcasing our new business cards!

I was happy with my cosplay though there was a lot of things that could be improved. I will talk about it in another post ! For now enjoy these:

I was very surprised by all the League of Legend cosplays I saw. I honestly didn’t imagine such a great group! There were so many awesome champions, but with my costume my photos were pretty limited. I believe BossEmily will have photos of the whole group =). Mine aren’t very good so wait to see hers!

This Brand was so good! I’m so glad I ran into him =).

There is definitely more to come! Hope you enjoyed my cosplay!

Shyvana Cosplay Final Update

22 May

Hello Everyone!

Click here for Shyvana cosplay Final Photos

This is the last update until Anime North! The people going will have the first look at the final product! For now, here is my final update, which is my whole outfit without paint. There are definitely some adjustments I need to a few things. The shoulders aren’t intact yet, and I need to redo the back skirt as its on the wrong side (-_-). I have no idea how I am going to stand this cosplay. Its very hot, and things are starting to fall apart! I shouldn’t have used dollar store hot glue.

My apologies for the terrible picture quality, I dont’ have anyone to help me with the photos. I’m forced to use Photobooth in bad lighting. I’m so terrified to paint this!!!

Here is another front view, and side view:

Here’s a close up of some prop details:

Here are some steps you might have missed:

Here is a Nocturne Cosplay Update:

I also have been helping a friend with his Anbu Kaskashi cosplay from Naruto. His mask turned out awesome!

Hope you’ve enjoyed the progress and learned with me during the progress. There are some things I would change If I had to do it again, but I will save that for another time. I must spend the time to finish my cosplay!

See you at Anime North!

Food Colouring as Body Paint (Dye)

28 Apr

Hello Everyone!

I would like to post about food colouring as body dying to help fellow cosplayers. I looked up food colouring as a dye and I didn’t find anything useful, so I tested it for myself. As most of you are aware I’m doing a Shyvana Cosplay. I need my final results to appear something like this:

Basically I’ve been trying to find different types of body paints but most people have complaints about it coming off after a few hours or from sweating. I’ve come across an excellent solution if I was going to a convention for a day. Unfortunately, I am going for 3 full days and I need it to last and allow my skin to breathe. If you want to try it, its called PAX, and I was fortunate enough to be lead to this forum from cosplay.com. To learn about PAX, a self-mixed body paint click here . I’d love to try it, but its a lot of effort and dedication. The author mentions that it takes her several hours to put on and take off the paint. Its just not an option I can take because I need my sleep between the days.

I looked up different mixtures with food colouring to form body paint, but they didn’t look appealing to me. It  basically ended up being like body paint that comes off. I was just curious and I didn’t see anything on food colouring as a dye alone, so I tried it. Here are my results for food colouring. It is only sticky for a moment you put it on. You should let your skin absorb the colour, before trying to take off the leftover liquid. After a few minutes it will dry and you won’t have a problem smudging. You can’t run it under water right away, or it will come off. If you wait about an hour it won’t come off with water, but easily come off with water and soap. I tried different colours made with red and blue food colouring.

As you can see it can easily look uneven, so I tried to even spread it and It did improve:

The smoother the skin you have the better it is to evenly apply it. I wanted to see if it would last so I went out clubbing with a patch on my arm! Yes I did!

Right before I left (7pm), it looked like this:

Right when I came back (2:30 am),  it looked like this:

It did seem to fade and become less even during the night, but it isn’t a bad solution for people with a tight budget or looking for an easy solution that won’t come off. The main issue I have with food colouring as a dye is that It shows everything, by that I mean it darkens your scratches and dry skin.

I noticed that with time the dye exaggerates dry skin over time. This is a photo I took this morning, because I was curious what it would look like if I slept on it:

So from the first photo you can tell that the colour distorts over a long period of time. It only looks bad up close, but far away, it looks fine. I washed it off with soap and water and it came off right away. So The reason why I will not be using food colouring as a body dye is mainly because I can’t get the colour I want. If I had no other option I would use it, but fade it more and carefully apply it, so it doesn’t look as splotchy.

Makeup Disguises suggested that I try Graftobain Makeup. She has shown me some photos that looks like it has great results! The best part is that it has a colour which is perfect for my Shyvana Cosplay. These are the colours from the site:

I will be ordering Blithe Spirit and I will let you know how that goes. I am worried as Anime North is fast approaching! I hope everything will come together fast!

Stay tuned <3

Shyvana Cosplay Part 4

24 Apr

Hello Everyone!

See  Shyvana Cosplay Part 1/Part 2 /Part 3 / Part 5

This part is all sewing. It doesn’t seem like a lot of progress, but it takes more time than making armor, believe it or not! If you have any questions about how I got to each step just leave a comment and I can go through it with more detail.

Basically I redid the bustier from part 3 because the armor bustier doesn’t fit as nice around the body. It also seems that Shyvana actually has fabric for her bustier. This is visible in the in game model, but not in the splash page. The fabric I ended up getting is too bright and red. It looks more of a purplish tie dye effect, so I’ll be fabric dying it after this step. Usually you should dye your fabric before sewing it, but I didn’t want to spend the time if it didn’t end up looking right.

Bustier Pattern was pretty much copied from the foam version. The only thing I had to redo was the bra cups because I need the fabric to have shape to hold the bra cups. I draped the cups, which is using fabric to put on the cup and tracing the shape you need. remember to but a seam in the middle of the cup or else it won’t shape properly:

Booty short pattern. I ended up doing more of a booty short rather than a underwear. Its gonna sit more comfortably on my during the long day, and its less skin to show! The bands are done in strips, so there’s no need for patterns. When making bands for any garment, the ideal size is 30% less than your final length:

It is really important when working with stretch fabrics and corners, that you fuse it! Without the fusing it will curl up and look distorted. Fusing is a woven adhesive you iron to the back of the fabric:

Here is the result of a clean finish with fusing at the back (inside):

I inserted hard mold cups so that it keeps a nice shape. Remember to stitch in the ditch (in the seam) with the lining so that it keeps in place. Here is the final product:

These sewn parts will be underneath all the armor. I will most likely attach it to the fabric, I’ll have to see what works the best. Hope that this post wasn’t too disappointing as sewing can be boring! Next thing I need to do is the back and bottom armor. On second thought I might de the fabric later on, after I paint the armor. I want to make sure the colours work well e.t.c. That means I’ll have to paint on the dye.

For those who are interested, I played a normal game against Mm zig (2467 elo) yesterday! We were getting owned at bot since he AD carried, but its ok cause the rest of the team he was paired up with was lower elo than us. The rest of our team was able to help us win the game since Mm zig was the only threat. Here are our two highlights:

I wasn’t able to get my good camera back from a friend, I’ll post clear photos of the cosplay so far, and hopefully my contacts as well.

Shyvana Cosplay Part 3

17 Apr

Hello Everyone!

Here is the top armor so far. I am having a bit of trouble getting the right proportions. I redid a couple of parts here and there, so that’s why I’m a bit behind then I wanted to be. My pieces are not in the fast mache yet, because I’m still considering redoing a couple of parts. The shoulder pieces seem too small, and I might do the bustier part in real fabric for better comfort and shape. I wanted to be consistent with the armor but when I was carefully watching the video the bustier actually appears to be in a fabric material and has a different shade of red. It matches the shorts of the outfit so maybe I’ll just do them in the same fabric. I’m not sure, still in great debate. Anyways, here is what I have come up with so far:

Front Armor. Your’ll noticed that I have bra cups, instead of doing it myself in foam board. I think its really important to get the right shape when doing the chest! Sounds silly, but I’ve seen some amazing cosplay’s and then it was ruined because the shape of the chest looked funny. I just bought bra cups from the fabric store, so I wouldn’t have to worry about that.

Back Armor:

Armor Arm Pieces:

I redid the tail because it looked awful. I thought I could shape edges with the Fast Mache but its too hard! I recommend always trying to make the shape as close as possible before applying the Fast Mache, I’ll apply the Fast Mache to the tail soon:

If anyone is wondering how I am going to keep the helmet on, here is my trick. It actually works really well but I braid my hair before putting this on, so it catches better. It doesn’t hurt, but I am going to put a strap behind it for extra support.

Cosplay all together so far:

Sorry about the above photos, I don’t know why they came out so blurry. I’ll take better ones on the next update.

Contact photos are late, my apologies! They look pretty scary, I’m not sure if they suit Shyvana.

Shyvana Cosplay Part 2

7 Apr

Hello all!

Here are the arm pieces for my shyvana cosplay. I was not able to finish the right arm piece completely. It took me longer than I expected, so you’ll be seeing it partly finished. I will update my post when it is completely done, but for now only the left arm is complete. The right arm still needs some more mache and  sanding. I thought the head piece would be harder than the arm pieces but I guess I was wrong -_-.

Hope you enjoy!

Forming shape out of foam board:

Using spray foam:

Carving the foam to desired shape:

Using paper mache to cover the holes, and then using fast mache for finish:

Right arm with fast mache:

Left arm sanded:

side view/Left arm sanded/right arm unfinished:

Top view:

“Come get a glimpse into the belly of the beast!”

Let me know if you anything looks weird, or if I should change anything! I noticed I may have made the pieces too big? or the top pieces don’t look high enough? I probably won’t change it though, as I’ve already covered it and almost finished it. I do know that there is a diamond shape missing on the nose of the head. It will be added!

Next I will make the top armor piece with shoulder armor!

Shyvana Cosplay Part 1

1 Apr

Hello all!

I’m doing a Shyvana cosplay from League of Legends. Its the first time I’ve taken serious time and effort to do a cosplay, so hopefully it will end up ok. I’ve based my cosplay more on the in game model, than the splash page. They are unfortunately different =/.

Here is the splash page:

In game model:

So far so good. I’ll post the steps I’ve taken to reach the final product. So here is my first step, doing the head piece.

Building the head support (used foam board , masking tape and paper mache):

Building the horns with thicker foam board and wiring to keep it strong:

Using spray foam to fill in the horns, then carving it:

Paper mache the horns so that its easier to instant mache!

Forming the tail pieces flat:

I attached the pieces by wire and string, it actually moves side to side! After, I applied the instant paper mache:

A lot of people have asked me how I did the wiring inside of the helmet so that it would move side to side. It’s very hard to explain and I couldn’t show you well on the final piece. So basically I had to weave the wiring in and out of the piece so that it would stay in place and hold the piece up. I should have done a video but at the time I was just taking photos I didn’t know I would be doing this blog XD.  I know its very confusing, I hope this helps a little, here is a sketch of how I did the wiring of the tail:ShyvanaHeadpiece

Sanded down:

So thats it for now. I’m gonna start the arm pieces and get back to the head piece. I’ll probably add more instant mache and then do the paint job all together with the rest of the armor.
